Bone Of The Day: Marco Benevento

Happy Music Monday! Today we’re featuring something a little different. First of all, we’re announcing that our friend Marco Benevento will join us at the Hiro Ballroom in New York on 2/18/2012 as our special guest on keys for night one of the Nolafunk.com Mardi Gras Ball! We’ve been joined by Marco Benevento several times in the past, most recently on the Acuara Stage at the 2011 New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. Thanks to Brian Epstein for these two shots from Jazzfest!

A note from archivist fUNKYbret: Seeing as it’s Music Monday, I’m pleased to offer some aural insight into what may have been the genesis for Bonerama’s relationship with Mr. Benevento. Back in January of 2009, Bonerama was aboard Jamcruise 7 with a plethora of amazing musicians. On the fourth night of the cruise, the band made their way to the “Jam Room” for some late night fun. As fate would have it, the Bonerama horns took the stage for a bit while Marco was up on keys. The rest, as they say, is history.

Does that sound cool? Wanna listen in? Thanks to our friend Charlie Miller, this most super of superjams is available for your listening pleasure. Keep in mind, this is all improv, so it’s about as loose and jammy as it gets. The magic begins (for Bonerama, at least) about halfway through disc two, track two (aka track 7 on the streaming player in the top right corner of the page) with a jam on Cissy Strut. Check it out!

Rolling Stones Tribute Festival….1-6-12….Rock & Bowl….setlist

The BNR horns were part of a show @ Rock&Bowl last night that really rocked. The Rolling Stones Tribute Festival. The band was strong: Chuck Credo, Alex McMurray (guitars), Reggie Scanlan (bass) John Gros (keys, not Bobby), Chad Gilmore (drums) Irene Sage (vocals) Joe Stark (guitar and vocals), Fred Leblanc (vocals). Dave Stocker, English Bob and Glen also played keys or guitars. We spent 2 days of rehearsing and working hard on the songs and added some cool Bone stuff in the mix of it all. Mark wrote a killer arrangement of Gimme Shelter with the bones starting the Keith Richards guitar part. It was a guitar layered part done in the studio on the Stones ‘Let It Bleed’ record from 1969. The layers last night were just Greg, Mark and I all night long.
It was a lot of fun playing all Stones songs. I definitely have a new appreciation for The Rolling Stones.
Who knows, maybe a Stones song may show up on a Bonerama set list. -ck
